Main image: Laura took this selfie on one of her visits to South Africa.
Another selfie when Laura was back in South Africa in October 2012. She would wear an abaya on most days and she would also pray a couple of times a day on a patio of our home overlooking a wetland, home to many species of birds and animals.
Laura wrote this on a loose piece of paper which I found in her project book from her ‘hidden luggage’.

DUA ISTIKHARA – GOODNESS FROM ALLAH
“O ALLAH, I ASK YOU TO SHOW ME WHAT IS BEST, THROUGH YOUR KNOWLEDGE, AND I ASK YOU TO EMPOWER ME, THROUGH YOUR POWER, AND I ASK YOU TO GRANT ME YOUR FAVOUR, FOR YOU HAVE THE POWER OVER ALL THINGS AND I HAVE NONE, AND YOU HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE OF ALL THINGS AND I HAVE NONE, AND YOU ARE THE ONE WHO KNOWS ALL THINGS INVISIBLE.
O ALLAH, IF YOU KNOW THAT THIS SITUATION AND PLACE IS IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF MY RELIGION, MY LIFE IN THIS WORLD, AND MY LIFE IN THE HEREAFTER, AND CAN YEILD SUCCESSFUL RESULTS IN BOTH SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM, THEN MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR ME AND MAKE IT EASY FOR ME, AND THEN BLESS ME IN IT.
O ALLAH, IF YOU KNOW THAT THIS SITUATION AND PLACE IS NOT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF MY RELIGION, MY LIFE IN THIS WORLD, AND MY LIFE IN THE HEREAFTER, THEN TURN IT AWAY FROM ME, AND MAKE IT EASY FOR ME TO DO WELL, WHEREVER I MAY HAPPEN TO BE, AND MAKE ME CONTENT WITH YOUR DECISION, OH MOST MERCIFUL AND MOST HIGHEST.
Also in Laura’s ‘hidden luggage’, on her computer, I found ‘Quran – Mulla.
“Surat Al-Baqara” from Quran by Mishaari Raashid with Ibrahim Walk [Saheeh Intl Translation]’.
